Visual Arts in Cobb County

The Cobb County Schools Visual Arts Department supports individual programs in all Cobb schools. Visual arts classes are offered at all grade levels, K-12, and taught by 130 highly trained and specialized visual arts educators.

  • 66,000+ Cobb students are enrolled in 61 different visual arts courses each year.
  • 45,000+ elementary students receive visual arts instruction.
  • 21,000+ students enrolled in visual arts elective programs: middle school art, 8th grade advanced art, high school visual arts courses including International Baccalaureate, AP Drawing, AP 2D Art & Design, AP 3D Art & Design, & AP Art History.
  • Yearly participation in over 300 art exhibits & contests at the local, state & national level.

Visual arts instruction in Cobb prepares students for school, work, and life. The Georgia Standards of Excellence are reflected through the Cobb Teaching and Learning Standards, guiding students to communicate their ideas creatively in a visual format. Instruction in the visual arts discipline is delivered through four strands: production, presenting, responding, and connecting. These four investigative areas allow students to learn to create their own artwork, present it for exhibition, express artistic intent through oral conversation and written explanation, and connect their work to other disciplines and real-world experiences.

Vision and Mission

Vision: Empowering all learners as creators and communicators through the visual arts.

Mission: Developing ideation and visual arts skills to build student self-expression and creative confidence.

Through visual arts instruction, students use applied learning to:

  • Solve problems to make decisions
  • Think creatively
  • Explain choices and outcomes
  • Understand cultural values, beliefs, and imagery used by others
  • Practice self-regulation and build self-esteem
  • Articulate a vision
  • Develop the ability to imagine possibilities
  • Accept responsibility
  • Complete tasks from start to finish

Fine Arts Diploma Seals

More than 890 Cobb seniors received Fine Arts Diploma Seals in 2022. The diploma seal is a signal to employers and higher education institutions that a student is prepared to participate in Georgia’s $62.5 billion creative economy. Students can receive a diploma seal in fine arts for completing an instructional pathway, community service hours, and a capstone project in dance, music, theatre, or the visual arts.
