Osborne's Red Sea of Sound Heading to the Alamo Bowl

December 18, 2025 — The Osborne High School Marching Band—known as the Red Sea of Sound—is preparing for a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity as the student musicians head to San Antonio, Texas, to participate in the Valero Alamo Bowl. The invitation allows the band to perform on a national stage in the Alamodome, in front of more than 70,000 fans. This unique event extends the marching band’s season beyond football season, showcasing the dedication and hard work students have maintained since summer training began in July.

"They've been working hard since practices began in July," said Osborne Band Director Isaac Wimberly. "I'm very proud of these kids for pushing through and continuing to work hard. We're taking 80 band members on this trip, and I think they are excited to perform during their break instead of staying home. It's 75 degrees in San Antonio, so we'll get to leave winter in Georgia for a few days."

During Alamo Bowl festivities, the band will take part in two major performances. Students will join a mass band with others from across the country to perform together during halftime of the bowl game on December 30. Ahead of the big day, the Osborne band will compete on December 28 with its own show for a chance to secure the top score and the opportunity to perform individually at the Alamo Bowl pregame. This year’s show features a vibrant Latin theme, including selections from the Rio 2 soundtrack, “Carnaval” by Celia Cruz, Gloria Estefan’s “Conga,” and music by Selena, along with dynamic dance and auxiliary features that highlight Caribbean and Hispanic influences.
Junior trombone player Destiny Torchon said playing in the Red Sea of Sound has really helped her "come out of her shell."

"I used to be really shy, but now, I don't think I can go two seconds without saying 'hi' to someone in the hall. Marching band has been like a family, you know. I've been able to connect more with other people. Honestly, it has been my favorite experience of high school!" Destiny said with a smile.
The trip is not only about performance but also about cultural enrichment and student engagement. Most of the students have never been to Texas or traveled this far from home. In addition to performances, students will enjoy experiences such as a visit to the San Antonio River Walk, a river cruise, a trip to Six Flags, and a Texas-style dinner at a ranch. These activities are designed to reward students for their hard work while providing memorable experiences during their winter break.
"I'm looking forward to performing with my peers and also doing all the fun activities that we have planned. I'm really thankful for the band, and they're all like family. It's such a good community to be a part of. Everybody is just so connected, and we all love each other. I'm really thankful to be able to have this opportunity," said junior clarinet player Kaitlin Stokes.

This opportunity has been made possible through a combination of student contributions, fundraisers, donations, and the support of the band boosters organization, along with parent chaperones who will accompany the group. Community members who wish to support the Osborne band program can donate through the band’s online giving link.
Director Wimberly also wanted to make sure to recognize his staff and the many others who contribute to the success and quality of the Red Sea of Sound. They include:
Edwin Victor, Associate Director
Deller Nesmith, Auxiliary Faculty Sponsor
Alize Austin, Color Guard Instructor
Catherine Holt, Dance Instructor
Cheryl Fuller, Auxiliary Assistant
Joshua Lucero, Percussion Instructor
Joe Lucero, Media Team
"We're so proud and blessed to have this opportunity," Director Wimberly said in conclusion. "I love this community. Osborne is very supportive of what we do—the administration, the teachers, the parents, everyone. I'm thankful to be here to help steer things and to work with these students. I am so happy and excited that we are able to give these kids a positive and memorable experience like this!"
