Cobb Schools' Athlete of the Week (AOW) program is a weekly recognition of a male and a female student-athlete that perform at high levels in their sport, in the classroom, and in their school communities. The program is made possible by support from BSN.

This week's winners are Cobb County Track and Field Champions: a thrower from Allatoona and a runner from South Cobb.

Tahir Hines, Allatoona, Track

At the Cobb County Championships, Tahir swept both the discus and shot put events. He threw 171’9 in the discus and 55’11 in the shot, breaking the school record by almost three feet. He currently holds every throwing record at Allatoona High School. He is ranked first in the state for Discus and second in the state for Shot. His discus throw is ranked 37th in the nation, and he's only a junior! He was also recently nominated as Student of the Day by his culinary arts teacher.

"Tahir means so much to this team," said Assistant Coach Casey Smith. "He is a consistent point leader on the team and has been since his sophomore year. He was voted to the Athletic Leadership team by his coaches. He is also the President of Key Club, National Spanish Honors Society, is a Leader in FCA, and Chess Club. He has a 4.375 weighted GPA. His teammates look up to him as a leader and will take any advice he offers."

"His teammates and classmates think the world of him," concurred Allatoona Athletic Director Amie Howard. "He is definitely one of the strongest leaders in his class. He is the perfect example of a student-athlete. We are so proud of him for all that he is accomplished as an athlete, but even more so for the wonderful person he is and example he is to others." AOTW%202223%20(32).png

Oluwatosin Awoleye, South Cobb, Track

At the Cobb County Championships, Oluwatosin broke the state record in the 800 meter with a time of 2:07. She currently holds the school record, number one in the county, number one in the state, and is ranked Top 10 in the country for her stellar performance. Only a sophomore, she works hard on and off the track, shows great leadership skills, and is always willing to go above and beyond. Her hard work and dedication is evidenced by dropping four seconds off her time since January!

"Tosin embodies the discipline and the heart needed to be successful in track," said her coach Andrele Kelly. "She is a role model to others on the team and is a great example of what it means to run with heart. When workouts are tough, she pushes through it and the other athletes follow suit. She listens to her coaches and is always willing to do whatever it takes to be better and better. The team looks up to her and follows her example and hard work."

"Not only is she a great athlete, she has a great personality, always willing to help others, and brings so much joy to the team with her jokes. She has not missed one day of school since Kindergarten! Tosin is determined to do great things in her future. Her and her family have impacted many on this team and we look forward to seeing her successes in the future," Coach Kelly concluded with pride for his Athlete of the Week.

Amazing work, Tahir and Tosin! As underclassmen, you both have so much room to grow and continue impressing us all with your focus, determination, and work ethic. Great job pushing these athletes to such amazing heights on the track and in the classroom, Allatoona and South Cobb! These are excellent examples of what a Cobb sports program is all about...
