Trojan Swimmer and Wildcat Gamer Win AOW

January 23, 2025 — This week's Athletes of the Week (AOW) are proof that Cobb's athletic prowess extends beyond the field and the court. High-level swimming and competitive gaming are recognized this week with an outstanding example of each.
Thanks to the support of BSN Sports, Cobb Athletics celebrates student-athletes each week who inspire and excel in their sports, academics, and communities. This week's AOW honors go to Ashlyn Loftin of Lassiter High School and Gavin Carstens of Wheeler High School.
Ashlyn Loftin, Swimming, Lassiter
A senior captain for Lassiter Swim and Dive, Ashlyn has signed to swim collegiately at East Carolina University. At the recent Senior Meet, she completed her goal of making every individual state cut. Swimmers usually specialize in one or two events, but Ashlyn is so well-rounded that she can compete in all eight individual events. She is the reigning State Champion in the 100 Breast. Not only is she a great swimmer, Ashlyn is also a gifted leader and role model for younger athletes, and a high-achieving student in the classroom.
"Ashlyn is a true leader of our team. She is positive, hardworking, and has great sportsmanship. Every girl on the team looks up to her," said her coach, Brittany Hughes. "She is involved in several Lassiter organizations and well well-liked by her peers and teachers. She is such a delight to be around!"
"She started swimming shortly before high school and has been a member of the team for the past four years. She swims year-round with the club team, Chattahoochee Gold. We are looking forward to her leadership as we head to our Region, County, and State meet!" Coach Hughes said with a smile.

Gavin Carstens, Esports, Wheeler
This is Wheeler's first year competing in Esports and players like Gavin are key to the team's initial success. Esports requires much more than the ability to play the game; teamwork and leadership are crucial to esports victories.
"Gavin has been the driving force behind the success of our inaugural esports season," said his coach, Dr. Wylie Tidwell. "While his technical skill is undeniable, it is his leadership and ability to rally his teammates that truly set him apart."
That is not all his coach had to say.
"In high-pressure moments, Gavin remains a composed anchor, keeping the team focused and motivated. His dedication to team chemistry and his 'never quit' attitude have been the foundation of our program’s winning culture this year. Gavin truly embodies the spirit of a captain and a competitor," Dr. T said proudly about his Athlete of the Week.

Congratulations to Ashlyn and Gavin for being selected Athlete of the Week! We look forward to watching each of you further excel in your sport and help lead your teams to more and more wins. Great job supporting these high-performing student-athletes, Lassiter and Wheeler!
