Football Players from Kell and McEachern Win AOW Awards
Cobb Schools’ Athlete of the Week (AOW) program is a weekly recognition of male and female student-athletes performing at high levels in their sport, classroom, and school communities. The program is made possible by support from BSN Sports.
This week’s winners are football players from Kell and McEachern. Moonie Gipson plays running back for the Longhorns, and Chelsea Njoku plays quarterback for the Indians.
Moonie Gipson, Football, Kell
The Longhorn offensive line was in top form in Kell's recent region win over Centennial. Moonie took advantage of the openings they made available to him and ran for 326 yards on 31 carries and scored six (yes, 6!) touchdowns. The Longhorns secured a playoff spot with the 61-49 home win and have the week off to prepare. Moonie is only a sophomore but has played football all his life. He is also a star in the classroom with a 3.7 GPA.
"Moonie is a great player who brings a special edge to our team," said Kell Head Coach Bobby May. "He gives us the confidence that we can beat anyone. He is a great leader, and the other kids look up to him. He's also very humble and gave all the credit to the O-line for allowing him to have such a monumental night!"
"He is an exceptional player both on and off the field," said Longhorn Athletic Director Oneisha Young. "Moonie consistently strives to improve himself academically and athletically."
Chelsea Njoku, Flag Football, McEachern
Flag football season has begun, and the Indians are picking up where they left off last season. Chelsea threw 24 passes for 316 yards, and scored 7 throwing touchdowns in a recent doubleheader at home. She also ran for 31 yards and one rushing TD! This is Chelsea's first year at QB; she played receiver the last two seasons. She also plays basketball for the Indians. On top of her athletic talent, she is a great student with a 3.75 GPA.
"Chelsea is one of the hardest-working athletes we have in the program. She takes the weight room, film study, and preparation very seriously. She’s always looking for ways to improve and is never satisfied," said McEachern Head Coach Jake Burgdorf.
"Her current stats have her ranked as the #4 QB in the state, but the other three have played 3-4 more games each," Coach Burgdorf concluded with a smile. "Chelsea is highly respected by her teammates and is constantly encouraging her teammates to get the best out of them."
Great job, Moonie and Chelsea! Way to go in supporting these exceptional student-athletes, Kell and McEachern!
