Junior adds another state championship in 800; Pope girls fourth overall

   South Cobb's Oluwatosin Awoleye successfully defended her title in the 800-meter run as the Class AAAAAA track and field state champships concluded Saturday at Rome's Barron Stadium.

   Awoleye, who ran a time of 2 minutes, 5.55 seconds, was joined by Whitefield Academy's Ruby Gordon as a champion in Rome.  Gordon ran 2:16.53 to claim the girls 800 in the Class A Division I championships.  

   The Pope girls were the top Cobb County finisher in Class AAAAAA, placing fourth with 44, trailing Woodward Academy (100.33), Lakeside-Evans (62) and Alexander (56). Other Cobb teams included Allatoona (12) in 20th, South Cobb (10) in 21st and Lassiter (3) in 33rd.

   Pope's Josie Hutchinson finished second in the 1,6000 (4:58.28) adding to her Day 1 runner-up finish in the 3,2000.  Teammate Aislynn Dunn finished fifth in the 800 (2:16.45) and fourth in the 1,600 (5:00.94).

   Allatoona (39) finished fifth in the boys meet, mainily on the strength of Thursday's field events.  Langston Hughes (71) won the meet, followed by Marist (52) and Alpharetta (51).

   Other Cobb teams included Sprayberry (15) in 18th and Pope (14) in 20th.  

   Pope's Dermot Maloney finish third in the 1,600 (4:14.96), adding to his second-place finish in the 3,200 on Thursday.

   Sprayberry's Mahkai Williams finished fifth and third, respectively, in the 100 (10.72) and the 200 (21.44).
