Summer Term offers a condensed learning experience, compressing the typical 16-week Fall/Spring term into just 6 weeks. Here's what to expect:

  • Time Commitment: Students are expected to actively engage daily, dedicating approximately 20 hours per week to both online and offline activities for a 0.5 unit class (e.g., Personal Fitness or Biology B). For a 1.0 unit class or two 0.5 unit classes (e.g., Health and Personal Fitness or Advanced Algebra Y), the time commitment increases to approximately 40 hours per week.
  • Structure and Flexibility: Cobb Virtual Academy (CVA) classes are asynchronous, allowing students to work at times that suit them best. While there are no regular live sessions, each student will have a synchronous welcome meeting with their teacher. Optional in-person or virtual support is also available through CVA Learning Centers. Students may work ahead but must meet all deadlines listed in the Class Schedule. We recommend reviewing the full schedule at the start of the term to stay on track.

Online Registration and Orientation

Opens Monday, March 2 at 9 AM.

Students will have access to their classes, including the online orientation, beginning the week of May 4th. Due dates will begin the week of May 26th.

Personal Fitness Heart Rate Monitor Information

At this time, CVA will no longer be issuing heart rate monitoring equipment. Instead, students can use their own device or use Rate of Perceived Exertion (RPE) to monitor workout intensity. This approach is aligned with current physical education practices and fully supports state and national PE standards, which emphasize self-awareness, self-assessment, goal setting, and meaningful reflection.

What does this mean for you?

  • You will no longer need a heart rate monitor or wearable device for this course.
  • During workouts, you will aim for an RPE level of 6 on a 1–10 scale.
    • RPE 6 = moderate to vigorous effort
    • You should be breathing harder, feel challenged, but still be able to continue the activity.
  • You will reflect on how your body feels during and after exercise rather than relying on external data.

Why are we making this change?

This approach to fitness:

  • Encourages listening to your body
  • Builds lifelong skills you can use beyond this class
  • Helps you learn how to adjust intensity based on how you feel
  • Places a strong emphasis on self-assessment, goal setting, reflection, and personal growth

This method develops habits that support long-term wellness.

Technical Requirements and Travel

CVA recommends using your CCSD-issued computer to complete assignments. CVA classes are delivered via the Cobb Teaching and Learning System (CTLS). CTLS is geo-restricted, so it is only accessible within the physical boundaries of the United States. Using a Virtual Private Network (VPN) while traveling outside the United States may help you access content that is geo-restricted.  Please see the bottom of the CVA FAQ page for more detailed information if you plan to travel during the Summer term.

Final Exams and EOCs

Students are required to take the final assessments as scheduled. Students may not exempt the final exam, and there are no make-up dates available.

Final Exams: Online

All courses without EOCs have a final exam. Students will have THREE opportunities to complete their final exam.

Early final exam opportunities will be offered by request only once a student completes ALL coursework.

Early Final Exam 1:
Tuesday, June 9, 8 AM - 8 PM

Early Final Exam 2:

Tuesday, June 23, 8 AM - 8 PM

During the last window, final exams may be submitted at any time during this timeframe:

Sunday, July 5 at 1 PM EDT - Tuesday, July 7 at 8 PM EDT

There are no makeups for the final exams.

Testing location for EOC Tests:

All testing will take place on the Cobb Horizon High School campus (1765 The Exchange, Atlanta, GA 30339).

Important Information:

  • Students must bring a photo ID. Options include the StudentVue app displaying student photo and CCSD information, driver’s permit, driver’s license, or passport.
  • Testing generally lasts about 2 hours.
  • CVA will send students and parents a reminder email prior to testing.  The email will include specific directions for finding the testing location.
  • Per district guidelines, students that do not take the EOC at the scheduled time will be issued a grade of zero and that grade will be calculated into the students' final course grade. Students will then need to contact their local school when they return in the Fall to schedule a make-up EOC exam. Once the make-up exam is completed and the score is returned from the State, the final course grade will be recalculated and posted to the student's transcript.
