While the name Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps (JROTC) may imply military training, the program's primary focus is leadership and citizenship development. Commander Phil Pascoe discusses JROTC and its presence and role in Cobb Schools in today's episode of The Inside Scoop.

CDR Pascoe is a senior naval science instructor and oversees JROTC programs at North Cobb and Harrison High Schools. The programs are structured into four major areas: academics, competitions, community service, and leadership development.

Academics include naval science and history, while competitions range from orienteering to drone racing. The community service component involves students in local events, such as providing assistance at football games. Leadership is fostered through mentoring, with students taking on command roles and participating in leadership academies. This hands-on experience helps them develop real-world skills.

Although the program is not a direct pipeline to the military, students can receive certain benefits like accelerated promotion. However, many choose JROTC simply to be part of a diverse, supportive community and participate in its various activities.

The impact on students is significant, with some finding direction and purpose through the program. The skills they gain—such as discipline, teamwork, and leadership—are valuable for any career path they follow. The program also provides a fun and engaging environment where students can thrive and grow personally and academically.
