The Inside Scoop: Leveling Up to High School

The transition from middle school to high school is an important step for both students and parents. This episode of The Inside Scoop explores this critical phase of the educational journey. Brandy Brady, a Cobb County counseling consultant, and Erica Watford, a school counselor at Walton High School, join host David Owen to discuss some of the major changes students face and how to successfully transition and thrive in high school.

One key difference between middle and high school is the ability to choose electives. Middle school counselors can assist students with this process in the spring before their freshman year, and high school counselors often visit middle schools to provide guidance. Parents should stay informed about registration deadlines and other opportunities through school communications.

This conversation also explores other factors, such as navigating a larger school environment, adjusting to new schedules, and taking on increased responsibilities. Students are encouraged to participate in orientation events, which introduce them to the school layout, clubs, and extracurricular activities. With some schools offering over 100 different clubs, there are numerous opportunities for students to connect with peers who share their interests.

Cobb high schools also provide resources such as freshman advisement programs, where students create tentative four-year academic plans. Parents and students should plan to attend ninth-grade family nights together to receive the same information and make informed decisions. Effective communication, self-advocacy, and consistent academic habits can prepare students for long-term high school success and beyond.
