Summer Learning

Palmer Middle recommends the following options for rising 6th-8th grade students that want to extend their learning and provide skills practice over the summer.
ELA and Reading
- Students should continue to build their English language arts skills by practicing on IXL 10 - 15 minutes each day. Students may choose the skills to practice and aim for 80%+ mastery, or they may work in the arena by practicing the skills that are recommended.
- Additionally, students should read for 30 minutes (or more!) each day. This will help support reading stamina, reading fluency, vocabulary acquisition, and reading comprehension. While it's always great for students to choose a book he or she is interested in, here are some suggestions by grade level:
- Incoming 6th grade students:
- Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, by Roal Dahl
- Sky Jumpers, by Peggy Eddleman
- Incoming 7th grade students:
- Stargirl, by Jerry Spinelli
- MiNRS, by Kevin Sylvester
- Incoming 8th grade students:
- Enchanted Air, by Margarita Engle
- The Crossover, by Kwame Alexander
Math
- Students should continue to build their math fluency by practicing on IXL for 10 - 15 minutes each day. Students may choose the skills to practice and aim for 80%+ mastery, or they may work in the arena by practicing the skills that are recommended.
