Vaughan ES Teachers Get a Surprise Back-to-School Party from WSB's Fred Blankenship
It's impossible not to feel great about your day when WSB-TV's Fred Blankenship shows up with breakfast and his ever-present smile. That's what Vaughan Elementary teachers discovered when Fred and 47-year veteran cameraman Tony Light showed up with fruit and pastries and a huge dose of optimism and encouragement for the upcoming school year.
Fred announced his arrival over the school intercom and invited all staff to the media center for a surprise party. The more than 60 individuals preparing for the first day of classes quickly came running.
"The way we start our days is how our kids start theirs," Fred reminded the Vaughan educators in the school's media center. "How we start our day matters, and how we start our year matters. It's so important. Each of you will always be a teacher in the eyes of the kids in your class. When you wonder about the impact you are making, remember that you are in the business of changing lives."
He also spoke about his own "little ritual" that he does before going on the air at 4:30 each morning to make sure he's in the right mindset for his viewers. Despite his natural positivity, he admitted that he often has to tell stories on the air that aren't positive. He gave the Vaughan educators great advice about how he copes with adversity on the job.
"We all have that one moment in our lives that we can think back on, refocus, and realize that everything is going to be alright. Use that moment to recharge when things get difficult," he said, using an example from his own life from when he was twelve years old.
Vaughan has a tradition called "Smarty Pants," which are autographed by special students and guests and worn by administrators on special occasions. Fred Blankenship has now officially joined the esteemed band of Smarty Pants signees.
Post 7 Board Member Brad Wheeler was also present at the event and thanked Fred after his short speech. "This was so great," Mr. Wheeler said emotionally. "You did a wonderful thing for these teachers and this school. I am so glad I was able to be here for this."
After gathering everyone together for a group photo, Fred gladly shook hands, gave hugs, and took pictures with everyone. He encouraged them in their roles—whether administrator, teacher, para pro, or support staff—and they all left the media center with a breakfast treat and a smile of their own.
"Our incredible Vaughan team was motivated and inspired to start the school year with this surprise visit from Fred Blankenship!" said Vaughan Principal Dr. Jenny Douglas. "His encouraging words reminded us why we do what we do: to make a difference for every child that we get to serve."
