Question: Why are you excited about joining the Hayes Elementary community?
Answer: “I am thrilled to join the Hayes Elementary community, a unique environment of dedicated teachers, enthusiastic learners, and supportive community members who nurture our future leaders. Being part of a team that is so committed to prioritizing what is best for students truly inspires me! The Hayes motto 'Yes we can! No excuses!' resonates deeply with me, highlighting the unwavering dedication of both our staff and students to teaching and learning. Together, we will foster an environment where every student feels empowered to learn and grow!”
Question: What does “student success” mean to you?
Answer: “To me, student success means recognizing and celebrating the accomplishments of each individual, as they differ from student to student. For some students, it might be the bravery to ask a question or seek assistance, while for others, it could be the milestone of reading their very first book independently. By providing an environment where students can thrive by overcoming challenges and pursuing personal goals, we empower them to believe in themselves and know that they CAN! At Hayes, we will honor achievements—big or small—and celebrate each meaningful step forward, ensuring that all students feel valued and supported.”
Question: What role do you see parents and the community playing in supporting student success?
Answer: “Parents and the community play a vital role in supporting student success by working together with teachers to enhance learning both at school and at home. Parents can support student success by being engaged in the school community, attending school events, and maintaining open lines of communication with teachers. Hayes has strong community partnerships that provide valuable resources and real-world experiences that connect classroom learning to practical applications, further motivating our students to grow. Collaboration is the key to student success!”
Question: What do you like most about being an educator, and what is your favorite memory as an educator?
Answer: “What I like most about being an elementary school principal is the pure JOY of working with children and being surrounded by staff who love children! My mission is to lead a community, empowering growth and respect. I deeply cherish every opportunity to help students feel valued and loved, and I take this role very seriously! One of my favorite memories as an educator is when my former elementary students, now in high school and college, took the time to reach out and share the positive influence I had on their lives. Regardless of where life takes them, they will always be 'Mrs. Shirley's kiddos,' and I'll always be their biggest cheerleader!”
Question: Outside of school, where might parents and students find you?
Answer: “On weekends, you can usually spot me running around Swift Cantrell Park, enjoying the fresh air. When I am not exercising, I enjoy photography, reading books, attending church, and just spending time with my family and friends. My middle school son keeps me busy, so we are always out and about around Cobb County.”
