Tragedy to Triumph: Mabry Student Honored at Atlanta United Game

October 13, 2026 — Whether on the soccer field, in the hallways of a hospital, or in the classroom, Evan inspires others every day.

Now a sixth grader at Mabry Middle School, Evan is succeeding in the classroom as an honor roll student, but his journey to this point has been anything but easy.

In March 2025, when he was just 10 years old, Evan and his dad were involved in a car accident while traveling to soccer practice. Evan suffered a traumatic brain injury and several broken bones.

For two weeks, Evan's family did not see him open his eyes. However, the inspiring student began his journey to recovery. His serious brain injury brought many uncertainties, but Evan remained determined. Each day, he repeated the same words to his family to stay motivated and positive.

"I am strong, I'm brave, I'm fierce, and I never, ever, ever give up," Evan said.

From drawing in the hospital and kicking a soccer ball from his wheelchair to receiving encouragement from family, friends, and his Cobb Schools communities at Davis Elementary School and Mabry Middle School, Evan eventually returned to the classroom, inspiring others along the way.

"It's something that Evan is living with every day, and it is showing other kids that things can be hard and tough, but you can still go through your life and be successful and achieve these things that are beyond the walls of middle school," said Evan's school nurse, Sam Stephens.

Evan is now a Children's Healthcare of Atlanta Miracle Kid, which means he can share his inspiring story of resiliency with groups across Georgia.

After relearning how to walk, talk, and breathe on his own, the Mabry student is working his way back onto the soccer field. Although he still experiences occasional headaches and physical pain, Evan refuses to let those challenges stop him from pursuing his goals, both in and out of the classroom.

As Evan continues his recovery, Atlanta United gave him and his family the surprise of a lifetime.

For the team's match against the New York City Football Club, Evan got to custom-design the jersey numbers each player wore on the field. As a goalkeeper, Evan featured soccer goals, robots, and other drawings on the jersey, making the honor even more meaningful.

Evan served as an honorary team captain and walked alongside the players as they entered the field. He also presented the match ball to officials and received a special moment in the spotlight as Atlanta United celebrated his inspiring journey of resilience and determination in front of fans at Mercedes-Benz Stadium.

"We are just so proud of him and so honored and thankful for all of these incredible opportunities he's been given so that he can turn around and help others and be the face of saying that you can do this, you can survive something like this and still excel," said Evan's mom, Robyn Davis.

Following the memorable Saturday, Evan returned to school the next week, where Mabry Principal Dr. Jonathan Tanner presented him with the Heart of Mabry Award. A plaque honoring Evan will now be displayed proudly in front of the school, serving as a reminder to everyone that Evan's story of overcoming adversity with a positive mindset is at the heart of what being at Mabry is all about
