Voices Take the Stage: Cobb Fifth Graders Shine in Annual Poetry Slam

April 2, 2026 — There is something special about watching a student step up to the microphone, take a breath, and share their words with a room full of peers, teachers, and families. That moment is what defines the annual Cobb Schools 5th Grade Poetry Slam.
This year’s event is shaping up to be one of the most exciting yet, with participation continuing to grow across the district. A total of 60 students from 12 elementary schools took the stage, representing a wide range of voices, experiences, and perspectives. At its heart, the Poetry Slam is a celebration of arts-integrated instruction. It shows how learning comes alive when students are given creative ways to connect with content.

Through poetry, students are not just completing assignments—they are expressing ideas, exploring emotions, and building confidence in their own voices. This year’s participating schools include Bullard, Bryant, Clarkdale, Pitner, Powers Ferry, Hendricks, Powder Springs, Still, Norton Park, Green Acres, Hollydale, and Mableton elementary schools. Each of these schools held its own local poetry slam, creating opportunities for even more students to get involved. Some events took place during the school day, while others invited families to attend evening showcases.
Students work to craft original poems, often centered around a shared theme—this year, “the art of words.” They revise, practice, and prepare to perform in front of judges and an audience. Judges evaluate both the writing and the performance, helping identify the students who will move on to represent their schools at the district level.
Every student who participates gains valuable experience. They learn to organize their thoughts, choose words intentionally, and communicate ideas clearly. They collaborate with classmates, receive feedback, and refine their work. When it’s time to perform, they develop public speaking skills that will serve them well long after elementary school.
Educators and families alike look forward to seeing how students interpret the theme and bring it to life on stage. When students blend spoken word with elements like rhythm and pacing, their poetry becomes something more. This year’s event also highlighted the role of engaging instructional tools in the classroom. Programs like Flocabulary, which use music to teach core subjects, have helped support vocabulary development and comprehension in creative ways.
The Cobb Schools 5th Grade Poetry Slam is more than a competition. It is a platform for student voice, a celebration of creativity, and a reminder of what happens when learning is both meaningful and engaging.
