ADMINISTERING MEDICATION IN THE CLINIC

With the exception of emergency medication (i.e. EpiPens and inhalers), all prescription medication must be administered in the clinic. Prescription medication is kept in a locked box during the school year. If your child needs to take prescription medication at school, please email Vanessa.Moutlhrop@cobbk12.org to schedule an appointment to bring in your student’s medications.

If you would like to drop off medication for your student, please contact Nurse Vanessa at Vanessa.Moulthrop@cobbk12.org to set up a time to bring in your child’s medication. Drop-in’s are welcome, but Nurse Vanessa prefers to set up a time in advance in an effort to avoid longer wait times for parents.

All medication must be dropped off by a parent/guardian and given directly to the nurse or clinic substitute. Unfortunately, the front desk cannot accept medication.

When dropping off medication, please make sure of the following:

  • All medications should be in their original container (i.e. no loose pills in a Ziplock baggie)
  • Rx medication must have the following clearly printed on the label:
    • First and Last Name
    • Name of Medication
    • Dose
    • Time(s) to administer.   PLEASE NOTE: If the time, which you would like your child to take their medication, is not consistent with the time listed on the Rx label, Nurse Vanessa will need a signed note from the doctor indicating the desired time change.
  • Please check the expiration date – expired medication cannot be accepted
  • The pill description on the label should match what is in the bottle
  • Please bring in no more than a 30-day supply of medication

ADD/ADHD Medications:
If you would like your child to take ADD/ADHD medication at school, please know that, per CCSD protocol, those medications are only allowed to be given on a daily basis. We cannot keep ADD/ADHD medication to be taken on an as-needed basis.

EMERGENCY MEDICATION

In Middle School, students are permitted and encouraged to carry their emergency medication at school (i.e. EpiPens, inhalers, allergy medicine). If your child needs to carry emergency meds at school, please fill out the Authorization to Carry Prescription Medication form and/or the Authorization to Carry Over-The-Counter Medication form and send them in to me. Please make sure that inhalers and EpiPens/Auvi-Qs are in the original box with the prescription label on it. If that is too bulky, you can remove the prescription label from the box and adhere it directly to the inhaler or EpiPen. This helps us know who the medication belongs to in case it gets misplaced, and it verifies that your student has a current prescription from their doctor. If you would prefer to keep your child’s emergency medication in the clinic, please email Vanessa.Moulthrop@cobbk12.org to set up a time bring it into the clinic.

ALL medications must be in their original container (i.e. no loose pills in a Ziplock baggie), and all Rx medication must have the student’s name, medication name, dose, and time to administer clearly written on the label. No expired medication can be accepted, so please double check it before you bring it!

CARRYING OTC MEDICATION

Yes! Now that your child is in Middle School, they are allowed to carry the following over-the-counter medication: Tylenol, acetaminophen, Motrin, Advil, ibuprofen, Midol, aspirin, antacid, cough drops and oral antihistamines.  Please complete the Authorization to Carry Over-The-Counter Medication form and return it to me. Your child will need to bring the medication into the clinic, so I can verify it.

ALL medications must be in their original container (i.e. no loose pills in a Ziplock baggie).  Please be sure to double check expiration dates!
