In this episode of The Inside Scoop, David Owen interviews District Teacher of the Year Karen Wright. Ms. Wright, a fourth-grade teacher at Big Shanty Intermediate, shares her journey to teaching and how she arrived in Cobb County.

Ms. Wright moved from Chicago to Atlanta in 1989, initially studying interior design before switching to education, thanks to the influence of her aunt. She has been a dedicated teacher in Cobb County for 27 years and discusses the supportive school environment and leadership she has experienced throughout her career.

She describes her recent Teacher of the Year honor as both exciting and overwhelming, particularly the moments when her accomplishment was celebrated in front of students and colleagues with the Superintendent’s surprise announcement. The recognition includes unique events, like the Handprint Ceremony and Teacher of the Year pep rally, where she received a brand-new car to use for a year, a perk her family is incredibly excited about.

Ms. Wright emphasizes the importance of connecting with her students, noting that meaningful relationships are key to effective teaching. She keeps up with their interests and uses relevant language in the classroom to build trust and rapport. She believes genuinely understanding her students' lives helps create a positive learning environment where students feel cared for and respected.
