Preparing a child for kindergarten involves easing them into new routines and fostering independence. On this episode of the Inside Scoop, school counselors Elizabeth Hatcher and Brooke Hampton highlight key steps to help alleviate anxiety and set expectations for new students.

A very important routine change for soon-to-be students is phasing out nap time since kindergarten does not include naps. Establishing bedtime and morning routines is also essential, with experts recommending parents begin waking children at their school-time schedule a few weeks before the first day. Doing a dry run to school several times can also help.

Parents should encourage children to dress themselves, put on and remove their coats and shoes, and work on basic skills like tying shoes. Socialization plays a significant role in kindergarten readiness, and parents should consider playdates for children to practice social skills, resilience, and problem-solving.

The kindergarten registration process is completed online through the Cobb County School District’s ParentVUE system. Required documents include proof of residency, birth verification, immunization records, and health screening forms. ParentVUE is also an essential tool for tracking grades, meal payments, and permission slips, making it a vital resource for parents throughout their child's education.

In addition, the District offers a "Kindergarten Ride Along" program every year, which allows children and parents to experience a school bus ride together. Schools also hold meet-and-greet events before the academic year starts to familiarize families with the environment. Staying connected through school websites and social media ensures parents remain aware of important dates and events, ultimately making the transition into kindergarten smoother for both children and their caregivers.
