Inside Scoop with George Morgan

This episode of The Inside Scoop focuses on Cobb's Special Education Services, highlighting the importance of providing the right support for students with special needs. George Morgan, Director of Special Education, is the guest and discusses the scope of the special needs community in Cobb and the resources available.

The process for identifying which services are needed involves gathering information from parents, schools, and professionals, including school psychologists, in accordance with federal and state guidelines. An Individualized Education Program (IEP) is then developed, outlining tailored support for each student. Regular IEP meetings involve extensive discussions with parents and professionals to create an actionable plan for each student's unique challenges and goals.

Navigating the special education system can be overwhelming for parents. Cobb Schools provides support through parent mentors and support service administrators (SSAs). Parent mentors have firsthand experience and help to guide families through the process, while SSAs work at each school to ensure compliance with regulations and provide resources. The District also offers training sessions and informational materials to help parents better understand the system and available services.

Socialization is another major focus for special needs students. Cobb's Special Ed Services incorporates social development into IEPs and organizes events like The Dance at Kennesaw Mountain to promote interaction with general education students. These activities help build confidence and life skills, fostering inclusion and personal growth. The District’s commitment is to both academic and social success, ensuring that special education students have the support they need to thrive.
