Cobb Schools graduate and staff member Patria Brown named Adult Basic Education’s Adult Learner of the Year

March 31, 2025—Being named the national Outstanding Adult Learner of the Year is an accomplishment well worthy of the highest praise, but knowing Patria Brown’s story makes the achievement all the more remarkable. Patria Brown, 2024-2025 COABE Outstanding Adult Learner of the Year, celebrates her journey from earning her GED to inspiring others as a leader in adult education.

Ms. Brown’s journey proves that perseverance and education can transform lives.

Born with one leg and a congenital defect in her hands, a young Patria endured 19 surgeries by age nine but found solace in learning. She excelled in school until life forced her to leave in ninth grade to focus on her family. For years, she encouraged her children to graduate while secretly longing to finish her own education. In 2022, after watching five of her children earn diplomas, she finally pursued her dream, earning her GED in just eight months through Cobb’s Adult Education Center.

Celebrating Success at the National Level

Now, as the 2024-2025 COABE Outstanding Adult Learner of the Year, Ms. Brown is showing how her perseverance is still paying off. The prestigious national award from the Coalition on Adult Basic Education (COABE) recognizes adult learners who have overcome significant obstacles to pursue their education while demonstrating leadership and inspiring others.

Ms. Brown was honored at the 2025 COABE National Conference in Dallas, Texas, where she received a $2,000 award and was recognized for her outstanding contributions to adult education. Her success exemplifies the transformative power of lifelong learning and serves as an inspiration to adult learners nationwide.

In March, the Cobb Schools Board of Education proudly recognized Ms. Brown for her latest achievement.

Building on Past Success

Last year, Ms. Brown was named the Adult Education Student of the Year by the Technical College System of Georgia (TCSG). She traveled the state as Georgia’s Dinah Culbreath Wayne EAGLE ambassador for adult education. The Cobb graduate spoke to students, civic groups, legislators, and others about literacy and lifelong learning.

“Patria’s success demonstrates the power of adult education and its impact not only on individual lives but on families and communities,” said TCSG Commissioner Greg Dozier. “Her recognition on a national stage is well-deserved, and we are incredibly proud of her accomplishments.”

Continuing Education and Career Goals

Currently enrolled at Chattahoochee Technical College, Ms. Brown is working toward an associate degree in Business Management. Her aspirations extend into the real estate industry, where she aims to pass the pre-license exam and ultimately become a real estate broker. Her goal is to combine her business expertise with her passion for helping others achieve homeownership and investment opportunities.

"Patria’s achievement is a shining example of the power of adult education and the incredible potential within every learner," said TCSG Assistant Commissioner for Adult Education, Dr. Cayanna Good. "We are so proud of her perseverance, leadership, and dedication to lifting herself, her family, and others up. As she continues her education at Chattahoochee Technical College, she inspires countless others to pursue and attain their dreams. Seeing her recognized on this national stage is truly an honor."

A Role Model for Adult Learners

Beyond her personal academic pursuits, Ms. Brown now plays a vital role in supporting other adult learners. As a Cobb County Adult Education program staff member, she is sharing her story to encourage others not to give up on their dreams.

“As a staff member of the Cobb County Adult Education program, Patria is now motivating others to follow in her footsteps and complete their GED through her inspiring story and her commitment to continual growth,” said Cobb County School District Assistant Superintendent of Accountability, Grants, and Research, Dr. Ehsan Kattoula. “Patria’s success is a remarkable example of one person’s dedication to bettering themselves and others through education.”

Last year, Ms. Brown delivered a touching keynote address for Adult Education Center graduates. Only the year before, she was in their place—a new graduate with plans for future success.
