The Inside Scoop: Cobb Sports with Don Baker
In this episode of The Inside Scoop, David interviews Cobb Schools' Director of Athletics Don Baker about athletics around the District. Cobb Schools is consistently a high-level achiever in sports, and last school year, the District produced 44 GHSA state champions in various sports.
Originally from Valdosta, Don has been involved in sports his entire life. He came to Cobb in 2000 and taught and coached at Kennesaw Mountain before becoming the Athletic Director. After serving as Kennesaw's AD for nearly a decade, he moved to his current role in 2019.
Don believes athletics is a pivotal part of what Cobb does overall and helps to serve and reinforce the lessons learned in the classroom. Lessons like discipline, endurance, time management, and organization are all necessary for success in sports activities (and academics).
Sports doesn't only mean games played on a field or a court. Last year Cobb had state champions in Dance and Literary as well as traditional sports like volleyball, track, swimming, and baseball. Other highlights include Lassiter winning back-to-back state titles in softball, Hillgrove claiming the flag football championship after a runner-up finish in its inaugural season in 2020, and Harrison and Lassiter winning the top honors in soccer.
