Cobb Schools Board of Education Recognizes State Sports Champions

As part of the final Board of Education meeting for 2022, Cobb Schools Board members recognized several District state sports champions. 

The recognitions kicked off with Samantha McGarity, a senior from Harrison High School. Samantha won the 2022 GHSA Class AAAAAAA Women’s Individual Cross County State Championship by over 40 seconds. Her time of 18:34 was the fastest in all Georgia High School Association classifications. This marks Samantha’s second individual state championship in cross country and her sixth overall if combined with her four relay and individual state titles in Track and Field. 

Next, the Cobb BOE recognized two state championship teams from Pope High School. The Pope High School Volleyball team claimed the title of 2022 GHSA Class AAAAAA Volleyball State Champions. With a 5 and 0 record in the state playoffs, the Pope team had a dramatic championship match that saw the Greyhounds go down 0 to 2 sets to Sequoyah before rallying 3 to 2 in 5 sets for the championship. 

In addition to the State Championship, the Greyhounds won the Region 7 AAAAAA Region Championship, ending an amazing season with a 42-5 overall record. They were 8 and 0 in Region play. The Pope High School Volleyball team served up several All-Region & All-State Players and is ranked #19 in the National Ranking by MaxPreps. 

The Pope High School Fast Pitch Softball Team also claimed a state championship title. The Greyhounds won the 2022 GHSA Class 6AAAAAA Fast Pitch Softball State Championship. With an exciting 7-0 record in the state playoffs and an impressive 35-1 overall season record, the team also captured the Region 7 AAAAAA Championship with an 11-1 record in Region Play. 

The Greyhound championship roster includes several All-Region and All-State players, the Region Player of the Year, Jadyn Lanearx, and the Region Pitcher of the Year, Kendall Frost. The Pope champions also earned the #1 Ranking in the Extra Elite 25 Fall Season National Rankings.

That is why I am proud to serve as a member of the Cobb Schools Board of Education and am thankful for the opportunity I have had this past year to serve as Board Chair,” said David Chastain, Cobb Schools Board Chair.

  • Amica, Charles, appointment to Director, Student Discipline from Supervisor, Student Discipline, effective December 9, 2022.

The Board voted to approve the following Ed-SPLOST projects:  

  • AGENDA ITEM #2 – Recommendation for Approval of Short-Term Construction Note Resolution Approving the Issuance of Request for Bids for the Purchase of $100 Million of Construction Notes 
  • AGENDA ITEM #3 – Recommendation for Approval to Award a Contract for Lassiter High School Flooring Replacement 
  • AGENDA ITEM #4 – Recommendation for Approval to Award a Contract for North Cobb High School CTAE Renovation 
  • AGENDA ITEM #5 – Recommendation for Approval to Award a Contract for Pope High School Concession/Restroom Renovation and Replacement 
  • AGENDA ITEM #6 – Recommendation for Approval to Award a Contract for Hayes Elementary School Food and Nutrition Services Improvements
