Always Helping: Cobb Schools Social Workers Support Students and Their Families
Spring is the time when many 5th graders around the District travel for their grade’s annual overnight trip to Rock Eagle. It is a trip the 5th graders look forward to all school year. It was an opportunity ten students from Sedalia Park Elementary School were going to miss out on because their families could not afford the $220 cost of the trip. That is until a Cobb Schools social worker stepped in and found a few community partners to cover the $2,200 needed for the students to attend.
That is only one way and one example of how Cobb Schools social workers have supported students and their families.
This school year, they helped distribute 300 donated hoodies to students in need. Cobb school social workers coordinated opportunities for students in need to get haircuts during the school day. They made sure Kroger gift cards got into the hands of families in need during the holidays. The District’s dedicated social workers also helped connect Uber gift cards with Cobb families who faced homelessness in Cobb due to their transportation needs.
Understanding the importance of literacy, Cobb social workers provide support for schools in the District opening Little Free Libraries to increase students’ access to books.
They serve as a resource to the principal and other educators. Working more closely with individual students and their families, School Social Workers additionally create a bridge between the school and the community when linking services.
Recently, Cobb’s School Social Work supervisor Ana Murphy was honored with the @CaronTreatment Educational Excellence Award, which recognizes an outstanding individual that has proactively supported and embraced programs that educate students on the area of prevention and awareness of substance use disorder.
During the school year, school social workers are confronted with challenges, heightened anxieties, and anticipated difficulties. However, Cobb school social workers face these challenges with strength and resilience.
This week schools across Cobb are celebrating National School Social Work Week and how social workers in the District have made a difference in the lives of Cobb students and families.
Take a moment and thank the school social worker in your school community.
