Parents will learn more about the importance of getting involved in their child’s education at a day-long conference this Saturday presented by the District School Board Parent Involvement Committee (DSBPIC).

Parent engagement is an effective way to bring teachers and parents together to share leadership roles and make mutually beneficial changes to the structure of schooling, says keynote speaker Dr. Debbie Pushor of the University of Saskatchewan.

Pushor is a leading expert in the area of parent engagement and her presentation will focus on her research that indicates that student success is linked to parent engagement. This is Pushor’s second time presenting at a Parent Leadership Forum in DSB.

“Research shows the more we’re engaged in our children’s education, the more successful they will be,” says DSBPIC Co-Vice-Chairperson Arlene Morell.

Workshop sessions throughout the day will feature practical strategies and skills that can be used to build on parents’ strengths and remove barriers to participation for newcomers to the school community.

There will also be a workshop based on the book “Beyond the Bake Sale” that will provide tools for action planning to increase the effectiveness of parent leadership. Each participant will receive a free copy of the book.

A few spaces are still available. There is no cost for parents and complimentary childcare will be available. Refreshments and lunch will also be provided for attendees.
