Earlier in the school year, students at Hickson Public School and Zorra Highland Public School participated in what Principal Deborah Wrack of Hickson PS described as “a new and very exciting initiative run by the Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Agriculture and Food.” The “Fresh from the Farm” program was created by the Province to promote and sell Ontario-raised food while also raising funds for schools.

Through the program, the school receives 40 per cent of the revenue; 50 per cent is returned to Ontario’s farmers; and the remaining 10 per cent will be retained by the Fresh from the Farm program to ensure sustainability. The students sold apples, potatoes, carrots, onions and parsnips. Principal Wrack is thrilled with the results for her school. “We had a huge success bringing in over $4,000 (equaling $10 per student) with a profit of $1,560 to go towards our FDK outdoor space,” Wrack says, adding that one student is a born fundraiser, bringing in more than $300. Principal Wrack isn’t the only member of the community impressed with the program. “As a school in a rural community this has been a very popular fundraiser with parents and farmers tweeting and posting a Stratford Gazette news story on Facebook.”

Together, the students sold more than 300 bundles of apples and vegetables with the three FDK classes generated the greatest amount of money for the cause.
