During Reading, the students listened to an article called Storytelling Trees which talks about the creation of totem poles. The students listened for their new vocabulary words "awe" and "concentration." When they heard the words, they wrote down what they thought the definition was. The students then worked in pairs to find the definition of these words in the dictionary and write sentences using the words. The students shared their results. Because we had some extra time, we were able to read some of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. During Math, the students learned more about polygons, what properties a polygon has, and the different types of polygons. The students seemed to pick up on this well, but some were confused by the classification of the various polygons. The homework tonight will have the students practice this concept more.
During Writing, the students worked with the four different types of sentences. They took the book that they were reading - or a fiction book from my library - and tried to identify the four different types of sentences in the book. They spent twenty minutes reading the books and writing the sentences they found in the book that made the specifications. Some students really excelled at this and were able to find 5 sentences for each sentence type. Other students found it difficult to transition from reading to writing and apply their knowledge of the different types of sentences. In order to give those students more practice, those students who do not have 5 sentences for each category must read for 20 minutes tonight and find at least one more sentence for each type of sentence.
During ELA, the students participated in a Listening Comprehension. The students chose 6 questions to answer. I read the questions aloud 2 times and then read the story aloud twice. The students Sketched and JOTTed during my second read. Then the students could answer the questions. After 12 minutes, I read the story a third time and the students could correct or change their answers then. I
