Keeping Students Safe: An Insider's View
On this first episode of The Inside Scoop for 2025, David discusses all things safety with Cobb's Assistant Superintendent of School Safety Operations, Josh Morreale. With over 27 years of experience as a teacher, assistant principal, and principal in Cobb Schools, Mr. Morreale now plays a key role in coordinating school safety alongside the Cobb Schools Police Department. His role bridges the gap between policy enforcement and police operations.
The focus of school safety has evolved from fire drills and weather emergencies to preparing for a broader range of potential threats. While not a police officer himself, Mr. Morreale collaborates closely with District police to ensure both criminal investigations and school policies are handled effectively. It is crucial to maintain clear boundaries between administrative actions and police investigations.
Advances in technology have had a major impact on improving safety in schools. Tools like the Vector Alert tipline allow students and staff to report suspicious activities, which are treated seriously and promptly investigated by police. Many safety threats surface through social media, and the District partners with agencies like GBI and FBI to conduct thorough investigations when necessary.
Safety must be both visible and invisible to maintain a positive learning environment. Visible technologies like weapon detection systems are used at events, while other safety measures remain confidential to protect their effectiveness. Support from the entire community—students, staff, and parents—is necessary to keep schools safe through vigilance and communication, always remembering that if they "See something," they need to "Say something."
