Clay Harmony Leland Teacher Selected for Elite Georgia Education Policy Program
Only 20 teachers from across Georgia earned the opportunity to participate in the Georgia Department of Education’s exclusive Teacher Policy Fellowship program. One of those teachers is part of the Cobb Schools team of veteran educators.
Learning to Shape Education Policy
During the nine-month program, Lily Motolenich, an ESOL teacher at Clay Harmony Leland Elementary School, will learn how to help shape education policy. Throughout this school year and into the summer, Ms. Motolenich will participate in seminars, workshops, and discussions with education leaders, policymakers, and legislators. Through this program, she will gain valuable insights into how education policies are developed and how they impact students and schools.
The elite fellowship includes a spring trip to Washington, D.C., where Ms. Motolenich and fellow educators will meet with federal education leaders, learn about how Congress influences education, and explore ways to bring meaningful changes back to Georgia schools. Throughout the program, Ms. Motolenich will also collaborate with other teachers to analyze education data, study real-world challenges, and develop a policy proposal based on her own experiences in the classroom. This proposal will be presented to a panel of experts as part of her capstone project.
A Teacher Who Inspires
As a biliterate educator who overcame the challenges of being a language learner, Ms. Motolenich connects deeply with English learners and their families. Her leadership in refining educational programs and her dedication to improving student outcomes demonstrate her passion for teaching. She has also earned state-level recognition from the Georgia Department of Education for her innovative work in the classroom.
Her students in Cobb benefit from her over a decade of experience in the District. In addition to Clay Harmony Leland, Ms. Motolenich has supported students at Russell Elementary School and Birney Elementary School.
The Future Impact
Her school’s principal praised her selection into the elite program and the positive impact it will have on students.
Clay Harmony Leland Principal Gina McClenning said, “Through her participation in the Teacher Policy Fellowship program, Ms. Motolenich will gain valuable insights into education policy, which she can use to advocate for students and families effectively. The fellowship will enhance her ability to bring innovative strategies and programs to Clay Harmony Leland Elementary, ensuring her students have access to cutting-edge resources and learning opportunities.”
