School counselors play a vital role in supporting students beyond the traditional "guidance counselor" duties of the past. Their responsibilities have expanded to focus on three core areas: academic achievement, college and career readiness, and personal growth. Patty DaSilva, Cobb's Supervisor of School Counseling, joins the podcast to discuss how counselors act as collaborators, bringing together parents, teachers, administrators, and community members to help students set and achieve their goals.

Counselors utilize various tools—such as interest inventories and assessments—to help students identify their strengths, interests, and abilities. Starting as early as pre-K, they introduce students to a wide range of career possibilities that align with their skills and passions.

School counselors also provide essential emotional and crisis support, helping students navigate personal challenges that may impact their education. They assist with everyday social conflicts, family issues, and emotional well-being while also stepping in during more significant crises, such as the loss of a student or staff member.

Parents are encouraged to engage with their local school counselor by staying informed about available resources, participating in advisement programs, and maintaining open communication. By working together, families and counselors can help students navigate academic, career, and personal challenges, setting them up for long-term success.
