Cobb Schools’ Athlete of the Week (AOW) program is a weekly recognition of male and female student-athletes performing at high levels in their sport, classroom, and school communities. The program is made possible by support from BSN Sports.

This week’s winners are from Allatoona and Lassiter. Peyton Garrett is a senior captain for the Buc tennis team, and Sophie Hortman is a junior midfielder for the Trojan lacrosse team.

Peyton Garrett, Tennis, Allatoona

Currently undefeated and having an exceptional senior season, Peyton has helped to lead the Buc tennis team to its most successful season in five years. He recently defeated last year's region champ from Cartersville, and his team won the North Cobb Invitational Tournament and the Lagrange Invitational Tournament. Peyton is also involved in Spirit Club and is a member of the Scallywags for the Bucs. He has been playing tennis since he was little, learning a love for the game from his mother. He brings energy and hype to wherever he happens to be.

"Peyton is a true standout and has been since he started to play for me his sophomore year," said his coach Michaela Hicks. "He really grew in his capacity for effort by leading from the second slot the past two years."

"He is a leader through and through. Peyton keeps us laughing, can out-eat almost anyone, and WILL be holding a region championship trophy this time next week. If I were a betting woman, I would bet on Peyton and this team for sure!" Coach Hicks concluded with a smile.

Sophie Hortman, Lacrosse, Lassiter

As a dual-sport athlete (basketball and lacrosse) and already committed to playing lacrosse collegiately at Top-10 Division 1 James Madison University, Sophie leads from the middle. As a midfielder, she impacts every aspect of the game—controlling possession, dictating pace, and elevating those around her. She played a crucial role in leading the Trojans to an impressive 6-1 in-state record, securing key victories over Blessed Trinity, Mill Creek, and Creekview. Sophie is also a high performer in the classroom, with a 4.2 GPA.

"Sophie is a true leader on and off the field," said Lassiter Lacrosse Coach Angela Brunner. "Her dedication extends beyond practice and competition. She diligently studies film on both herself and opponents to gain a competitive edge."

"Among many other awards, Sophie has been recognized as a USA Lacrosse All-American and a UA150 All-Star. She is First Team State, First Team Region, and All-County. But beyond the stats and awards, her presence is calming yet commanding, making her a vocal leader who keeps the offense poised under pressure. She embraces feedback with a growth mindset, maintaining a relentless work ethic and positive attitude that fuels her success and that of her teammates," Coach Brunner said about her Athlete of the Week.

Sophie Hortman Athlete of the Week

Congratulations, Peyton and Sophie! Your dedication to your sport, school, and studies is inspiring. You are both great examples of what it takes to be a standout student-athlete in Cobb! Thank you for supporting these students so well, Allatoona and Lassiter!
