ExceptiCON Celebrates and Equips Cobb's "Difference Makers"

June 30, 2025—The Cobb County School District recently hosted its annual professional development conference dedicated to those who champion students with disabilities—our Difference Makers in Special Education. Held at Hillgrove High School, the 2025 ExceptiCON Conference brought together special education teachers, therapists, support staff, and leaders from across the District for a day filled with learning, collaboration, and celebration.
From the moment participants walked through the doors, the spirit of the event was clear: to recognize, equip, and uplift the professionals who make a profound difference in the lives of students every single day.
Designed for Difference Makers
ExceptiCON is more than just a professional learning day—it’s a purposeful gathering of educators and providers united by a shared commitment to serving exceptional learners. With a full schedule of interactive breakout sessions, hands-on workshops, and panel discussions, attendees had the opportunity to explore innovative practices, strengthen instructional strategies, and deepen their understanding of how to support students with a wide range of needs.
This year’s theme—Difference Maker—served as a powerful reminder of the individual and collective impact special education professionals have in shaping student success. Whether working in classrooms, therapy rooms, or supporting inclusion and access throughout the District, every participant was celebrated for their role in creating opportunities for all learners.
Collaboration, Innovation, and Celebration
Hosted annually by Cobb Schools’ Special Education Department, ExceptiCON provides more than practical tools—it fosters a culture of connection. Educators from all levels came together to exchange ideas, share success stories, and learn from one another in a dynamic and supportive environment.
The conference also spotlighted the importance of cross-functional collaboration, with sessions tailored for speech-language pathologists, occupational and physical therapists, behavioral specialists, paraprofessionals, and administrators. This inclusive approach ensures that every special education professional is empowered with relevant, high-impact resources and strategies.
Assistant Superintendent and former Cobb elementary teacher and principal, Adam Hill, was invited to give the opening keynote address to the enthusiastic group of nearly 450. His talk, "Creating Experiences to Make a Difference," was well-received and much appreciated by all.
"Having Adam Hill join us as our keynote speaker was a highlight and set a strong, energizing tone for the day," said Special Education Director George Morgan.
Building on a Legacy of Excellence
Now in its third year, ExceptiCON has become a signature event for Cobb’s special education community. It has grown each year in attendance and impact, reflecting the District’s deep commitment to investing in the professional growth of those who support some of the most diverse and inspiring learners in our schools.
As the day concluded, participants walked away with much more than knowledge and new ideas—they left reenergized, refocused, and reminded of their purpose. In Cobb County, being a Difference Maker means showing up every day to meet students where they are and guide them to where they want to be.
"This year's event was truly amazing! We had record attendance, incredibly unique and well-attended sessions, and delicious food from our food truck partners," George Morgan said with a smile. "Thanks to the generous support of our sponsors, LGE, CW Matthews, and the Kennesaw-Acworth Optimist Club, we were able to create an enhanced, meaningful experience for our teachers, related service providers, and paraprofessionals."
