Cardinal Runner and Raider Hitter Earn AOW Awards

September 17, 2025—Cobb Schools’ Athlete of the Week (AOW) program is a weekly recognition of male and female student-athletes performing at high levels in their sport, classroom, and school communities. The program is made possible by support from BSN Sports.
This week's winners are from Osborne and Walton high schools. Jehiel Gomez runs cross country for the Cardinals, and Isla Schweers plays softball for the Raiders.
Jehiel Gomez, Cross Country, Osborne High School
A co-captain of the Cardinal cross-country team, Jehiel provides structure by developing rigorous and differentiated workouts for the multiple levels of athletes on the team. His teammates look up to him for guidance and advice. He started running independently in 2024. He has been running competitively with the team for the last two seasons, and he has been one of the top two runners consistently for both seasons. He also ran track for one year and broke the 1600-meter Osborne record with a time of 4:45. At the first cross-country meet, Hoya 2-Mile, he broke the 2-mile record previously set in 2017 with a time of 10:26. At the Woodland High School Run at the Rock 5K, he placed second out of 122 runners with an outstanding new personal record of 17:33!
Academically, Jehiel is an AP Scholar and has maintained a 3.85 weighted GPA throughout his high school career. He is enrolled at CITA and has completed the Energy and Power Pathway and is OSHA 10 and excavator operator certified. He is currently working towards achieving the Heavy Equipment Pathway and bulldozer operator certification.
"Jehiel plays a key leadership role on our team," said Osborne cross-country coach Stephanie Keyser. "He actively encourages new runners, helping them build confidence and pushing them to reach their potential. His combination of competitive excellence, leadership, and mentorship embodies what it means to be the Cobb County School District’s Athlete of the Week!"
The Osborne athlete has made school history—more than four decades in the making.
"Jehiel leads with grit and humility. He broke Osborne's 47-year 5K record at the Cobb County Meet with a time of 16:35! I am proud he is an Osborne Cardinal," said Cardinal Athletic Director Ron Boggs about his exceptional student-athlete.
Isla Schweers, Softball, Walton High School
Only a freshman, Isla is already helping lead her team to huge region wins. In a recent travel game, she batted in three runs to contribute to a huge 9-5 victory over Etowah. Isla participated in the Junior Raider program and has been playing softball for many years, which has given her a great deal of experience and a strong work ethic. She also plays on a highly competitive travel ball team. She brings exceptional play to the field and a great attitude to the locker room. She is also a really good basketball player and will undoubtedly be a factor in the upcoming Lady Raider hoops season.
"Isla has been a great addition to our program," said her coach, John Evans. "She is one of the first players to get to practice and is always willing to do whatever is asked of her to continue to grow her softball IQ and improve. She commands her teammates' attention and leads by example with her work ethic and her wonderful team-first attitude. She will be one that I, as a coach, will lean on for many years to continue to move this program in the right direction."
Her ability to stand out as a freshman has caught the attention of other school leaders.
"Seeing a freshman like Isla be able to step in and contribute to a varsity team shows the entire school that playing time is merit-based. There are opportunities for all grade levels to contribute to the success of our school," concluded Walton AD Chris Jones about his Athlete of the Week.
Congratulations, Jehiel and Isla! Good luck to both of you as you continue your academic and athletic careers in Cobb. Great job supporting these standout student-athletes, Osborne and Walton!
