Yellow Jackets Win Fox 5 Team of the Week
In recognition of their first 3-0 start in seven seasons, the Fox High 5 Team arrived at Sprayberry High School on Thursday, September 7, with a camera crew and a High 5 hand trophy.
"We love doing this," said Fox's Paul Milliken. "Every week during football season, we choose a team, host a pep rally, and crown them Team of the Week. The hand trophy is in honor of 'In Your Face,' which is our catchphrase and has been for years."
Sprayberry Principal Sara Fetterman wanted the entire school to celebrate this momentous event and invited all students to the school's brand-new gymnasium for the first-period pep rally.
"We were thrilled to have Paul and Fox 5 come out to Sprayberry to celebrate the success of our football team in our new gym," Principal Fetterman said. "Our coaches and players have spent months preparing for this season, and their hard work has resulted in the first 3-0 start since 2016. We look forward to seeing their continued success this week as we travel to Kell."
Head Coach Brett Vavra was grateful for the recognition and enjoyed the pep rally but said this is only the beginning. "There is still a lot of work to do, and that's where our focus needs to be," Coach Vavra said. "Everything is a stepping stone to region play, and that's when it truly matters. Our kids understand this. It's great to be 3-0, but as long as we're seeing progress each week, that's my goal for this team."
Coach Vavra is a Sprayberry guy through and through, having been a player himself for the Yellow Jackets. "Sprayberry has always been home to me," he said. "I'm very proud to be the head football coach here."
The Yellow Jackets face local rival Kell tonight at Longhorn Stadium for a true test of their grit and determination on the field. Kell is 2-1 and looking to keep their win streak alive. Listen to the latest Cobb Sports Podcast for more information on this rivalry game and to hear from Paul Milliken, Coach Vavra, Kell Athletic Director Jeff Burch, and much more.
Well done, Yellow Jackets, and thanks to Paul and the Fox 5 team for honoring and celebrating Sprayberry with the High 5 trophy. This is the first of many more accolades for this team the way they are playing this season. Keep up the great work, Coach Vavra and Sprayberry!
