Shannon Thorpe has served as an educator in Cobb Schools for more than two decades. After dedicating almost ten years to Durham Middle School, she's transitioning into the position of principal at Durham.

“During my time at Durham, I found a community that is committed to student achievement, academic excellence, and partners with staff and teachers to ensure students are meeting their greatest potential. As someone who now lives in the Durham Community, I am excited to be coming back to Durham Middle School to help lead students, staff, and the community toward a bright future,” said Principal Thorpe.

Question: What impresses you most about the Durham Middle School students, or what can the school community expect to see under your leadership? 

Answer: “Under my leadership, you can expect collaboration, communication, dynamic instruction, and students striving for excellence. You will see a visible leader who cheers, coaches, and supports students and staff while building meaningful relationships with parents and stakeholders.”

Question: What does student success look like to you? 

Answer: “Student success looks different based on the needs of each student. I believe all students can learn and succeed through a positive partnership between students, parents, and the school. Each member of this partnership brings an expertise to the collaboration that is necessary for students to succeed. Through this partnership, students are at the best advantage in achieving the goals they set for themselves and reaching their greatest potential.”  

Question: What do you like most about being an educator/principal, or what is your favorite memory as an educator?

Answer: “I have spent my entire career in middle school. My favorite part of being a middle school educator is watching the growth and maturity students acquire in such a short time. They are still truly children when they enter our doors on the first day of sixth grade, but as they leave on the last day of eighth, you can see the young adults they will become. Having an opportunity to support them as they learn and grow into young adults is the greatest privilege.”

Question: Outside school, where might students, parents, or staff members run into you? 

Answer: “I am a huge sports fan, especially baseball, football, and now soccer. Outside of school, you are most likely to see me cheering for my son as he plays soccer, enjoying a Braves game at Truist Park, or out at a restaurant as a family cheering on the Chicago Cubs. When not enjoying sports, I am an avid yard warrior. I enjoy planning and planting all types of flowers and plants.”
